PAULSBORO - Police are seeking information in the wake of a fatal fire here.

The body of Clarence A. Johnson, 65, was found inside his Roosevelt Street home after firefighters extinguished a blaze on Oct. 18, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

The fire, reported around 5:15 p.m., was brought under control by firefighters from Paulsboro and several surrounding communities.

The blaze sent clouds of thick smoke billowing from the single-family home, according to a photo posted online by Woodbury Fire Department.

"A determination of the cause of death remains pending at this time," the prosecutor's office said in an Oct. 24 statement.

The fire remains under investigation.

Johnson, who was known as Geechie, had retired after working for many years in construction, an obituary said.

He enjoyed fishing, cabinetry and "tinkering with a mishmash of items needing repair," it noted.

"He considered himself the next 'Chef Boyardee' in the kitchen, recreating dishes our mother/grandmother would make for us," the obituary continued..

It also noted his attendance at a "Wawa Greet & Meet," where the regulars "assembled daily, consuming coffee and trading quips."
