Foe, the new film starring Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan, has confirmed its release date as well teasing a first-look image.

The Prime Video film, which is being written and directed by Garth Davis, will be released in selected cinemas from October 6, with an arrival date on the streaming service set to be announced in the near future.

The logline for the film, which has been co-written by Iain Reid, reads: "Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior's family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up at their door with a startling proposal.

"Foe's mesmerising imagery and persistent questions about the nature of humanity (and artificial humanity) bring the not-too-distant future to luminous life," continues the synopsis for the film, which is said to be a "haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world".

Mescal, who shot to stardom on Normal People, garnered acclaim and an Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his performance in Aftersun, with the actor explaining how the role subverted male stereotypes.

"Being a dad is the thing that he loves the most in the world. I think he struggles with a lot of the rest of his life, to really tie a job down," he said. "One of those tropes that I feel like we're used to seeing the single dad being kind of ineffective. He's a really wonderful, wonderful father.

"It's refreshing to see separated parents when neither is an antagonist. I feel like we've seen that often the films have like 'the fun dad' or like vice versa," he added. "It was kind of moving against the trope that we normally see with single dads."

Mescal's other upcoming projects include All of Us Strangers, in which he stars alongside Andrew Scott, and the long-awaited Gladiator 2, where he will play the lead role of Lucius.

Foe will be released in selected cinemas on October 6; a streaming date on Prime Video is yet to be announced.
