The 2024 Oscars are already shaping up to be a memorable evening—and Paul Giamatti's reaction to Da'Vine Joy Randolph's win for Best Supporting Actress is an early highlight of the ceremony.

Wearing a glamorous Louis Vuitton gown, Randolph took home the first trophy of the night, capping off a remarkable awards season run that saw her win nearly every award she was nominated for. She was emotional as she spoke, saying, "For so long, I've always wanted to be different, and now I realize, I just need to be myself. And I thank you. I thank you for seeing me."

After Randolph finished speaking, the camera panned to her Holdovers costar Paul Giamatti in the audience, who was visibly crying at his co-star's win, tears streaming down his face. You can watch the moment here:

On X (formerly Twitter), many viewers took note of Giamatti's emotion. One wrote, "Paul Giamatti crying as Da'Vine Joy Randolph wins her #Oscars — that's the friend we all deserve." Another said, "Paul Giamatti crying during Da'Vine Joy Randolph's acceptance speech is my new favorite part of The Holdovers."

In The Holdovers, Randolph plays fictional Barton Academy's cook Mary, and Giamatti plays disgruntled professor Paul Hunham. The two, along with newcomer Dominic Sessa (who plays student Angus Tully, who is left at Barton with them over winter break), share many emotional scenes in the boarding school period drama together. Giamatti is nominated for Best Actor tonight, and The Holdovers was nominated for five total awards.
