Patron's Corner: Plan your summer reading with Carlsbad Public Library

Each year, libraries all over the world offer Summer Reading programs. This will be my 15th summer reading program. Summer Reading is a chance for the whole family to read, play, and stay engaged all summer long. Libraries want to make sure people have things to do while off on summer break and, even more importantly that their minds stay engaged. Reading during the summer helps students stay ready for the next school year.

Our program will kick off May 31 with our Summer Reading Kick OFF party. We hope you can make it. There will be activities, vendors, food, music and fun for the whole family. It will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. f you can’t make it, registration will go on all summer long. The program runs from May 31 until July 27. This is open to all ages. You can register in person at the library or online so even if you are traveling this summer you can register and record your progress from anywhere that has an internet connection. You can even check out one of hotspots to ensure you have internet connection on your great adventures this summer.

This year’s summer reading theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library. We are super excited about this theme. Many of our events will be focused on the adventure theme. So if reading is not your thing you can come to our programs and still find adventure this summer. But we hope none of you think reading is not your thing? If you do, I would love to help you find a book you will enjoy this summer. We know that reading can be hard with busy schedules or for many other reasons, but have no fear; many things count for the summer reading program. Audiobooks, ebooks, graphic novels, newspapers, you name it. And we promise there will be no book reports either. We want you to enjoy what you read.

We have weekly events. Tuesdays we have special performers and local organizations ready to help you find adventure right where you are. Wednesdays at 10 a.m. join us for crafts and games. Each week has a different theme and fun for the whole family. Teens can join us at 2 p.m. for our Teen Hour. Thursdays we have baby story times at 10 a.m. and Lego STEM time at 2 p.m. Fridays are for family story times at 10 a.m. and Tween Time at 2 p.m. We truly offer something for the whole family.

We also have special performers all summer long. There are too many to list them all, but I will mention one that you can’t miss Meghan Casey- Puppet Show: Wednesday, June 19 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Walter Gerrell’s Performing Arts Center. You won’t want to miss it. Meghan is a talented performer and we want to fill the whole Civic Center with families enjoying the puppet show. Do you know how much it will cost? Free!

These are just a few things we will be doing this summer make sure to get signed up and grab a calendar to ensure you see the magic that is going on this summer. We have music, animals, magic, and so much more. We have something every day of the week. We want everyone to get signed up and read as many books as possible. How cool would it be to break a new record for the most books read in a summer? We hope to see you all summer long!
