Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer is officially back on the New England Patriots roster, and this time, it’s for good.

The Patriots promoted Hoyer from their practice squad to serve as Mac Jones’ backup last weekend in Miami and then reverted him back to the taxi squad after the game. That was only done for procedural purposes though.

This morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots have signed Hoyer to a one-year contract which elevates him to the active roster.

Hoyer is the Patriots’ lone backup to the rookie Jones, as Jarrett Stidham remains on injured reserve. Garrett Gilbert is currently on the team’s practice squad, and of course, New England released Cam Newton after training camp to clear the way for its first-year starter.

Considering Hoyer’s extensive history with the Pats, it’s no surprise Bill Belichick trusts him and continues to bring him back into the fold.

Obviously, the best-case scenario for New England is Mac Jones starts all 16 games, but if he has to sit at any point, the coaching staff clearly has confidence in Hoyer stepping in.
