With the 137th pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots selected Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe.

For a variety of reasons, this pick was puzzling to fans and analysts around the NFL world.

First of all, the Patriots already have a talented young quarterback in Mac Jones. The No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 draft is coming off an excellent rookie season in New England and is widely considered the team’s franchise quarterback of the future.

“Damn Mac Jones on the hotseat?!” one fan wrote.

“Mac Jones shaking,” another added.

With the Patriots’ body of work in this year’s draft, many are starting to question Bill Belichick’s vision.

After taking Chattanooga offensive guard Cole Strange with the No. 29 overall pick (well above his projection), Belichick traded up into the second round to get Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton — a projected fourth or fifth-round pick.

Others noted that North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell, a projected second-round pick, still has yet to come off the board.

“Tough Day to be a Sam Howell fan,” one fan wrote.

“Over Howell wow. A massive fall from grace for the Carolina kid,” another added.

Belichick has made a name for himself with his ability to draft diamonds in the rough. Some fans believe the all-time great coach knows exactly what he’s doing.

“I’ve head this story before…small school QB becomes the best slot receiver in franchise history and goes on to win 3 Super Bowls,” one wrote.

In 2021, Zappe set the all-time single season passing touchdown record with 62.

What do you think of this pick?
