Debbie Cook, director of the Veterans Services office, described Walker as a "hands-on type of individual who has become active in the everyday needs of the office and of his fellow veterans." When the office needed vans, Walker was helpful in acquiring them, she said.

"When things are needed, all you have to do is tell this veteran and he will be there to help in a short time," Cook said.

Walker served in the U.S. Navy from June 1968 to May 1972 as a hospital corpsman. He served with the 7th Marines in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 and with the 12 Marines in Okinawa.

He is a member of American Legion Post No. 494 in Sugarcreek, New Philadelphia AMVETS Post No. 1338, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1445 in New Philadelphia and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 857. He is vice president and secretary of the Veterans Service Commission.

Walker assists the Marine Corps League with its Toys for Tots program, and he also decorates the graves of veterans in area cemeteries for Memorial Day weekend.
