Patrick Mahomes wins season crown in Miami Herald NFL QB rankings. Where’s Tua? Here’s final top 40

KANSAS CITY’S PATRICK MAHOMES EASILY WINS SECOND SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP IN MIAMI HERALD NFL QUARTERBACK RANKINGS; JUSTIN HERBERT SECOND, JOE BURROW THIRD: The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes comfortably wins his second season championship in the Miami Herald NFL Quarterback Rankings, following his other in 2018. Mahomes’ 641.50-point season total enjoyed a 56-point margin over runner-up Justin Herbert of the Chargers. Third-place Joe Burrow of the Bengals lost out on one game because of the Damar Hamlin/canceled game situation. That likely cost him second place, but there is almost zero chance that extra game would have allowed him to surpass Mahomes. The Bucs’ Tom Brady finishes fourth, and the Vikings’ Kirk Cousins rounds out the top five after winning Week 18. The Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa finished in 13th place despite missing four full games with two concussions. (His per-game average extrapolated over a full 17 starts would have had him finishing eighth.) Our ratings system is cumulative not percentile-based, rewarding players who are consistently productive and avoid injury, benching or not playing for other reasons. This was the 25th anniversary year for the Herald’s Passer Success System (PASS) rankings, which began in 1998, the year before Dan Marino retired, with Steve Young the inaugural season champion. Our rankings factor accuracy, passing yardage, touchdown/interception ratio and team result. They are passer ratings per se and do not include a QB’s running statistics. Our final expanded top 40 (plus other Dolphins) for the 2022 season:
