Patrick Mahomes’ long Super Bowl run came after subtle sign from Chiefs’ Creed Humphrey
The Chiefs’ longest play of Super Bowl LVII came on a run by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, even though he was clearly hobbled at the time.
With the game tied in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs had a first down at the Eagles’ 43-yard line with 2 minutes, 55 seconds to play in the game. Mahomes dropped back to pass but then scampered up the middle for 26 yards despite dealing with a high-ankle sprain.
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger shared a video that showed Mahomes getting a signal from center Creed Humphrey before the snap.
“Watch Creed Humphrey,” Baldinger says in the video. “See what he’s doing right there with his right hand? We got five, we got five up here, Pat, we’ve got five and I got the nose by myself. If you want to run, we’ve got five, we’ve got them.”
Here is the video of Humphrey signaling to Mahomes.

Thanks to solid blocking at the line of scrimmage, a big hole opened in front of Mahomes and he took off running.
As the NFL’s Next Gen Stats showed, Mahomes’ big run bumped the Chiefs’ win probability up 12.1%, to 81.2%.
Patrick Mahomes scrambled 26 yards for a first down, increasing the Chiefs win probability from 69.1% to 81.2% (+12.1%).

That dash put the Chiefs in field-goal range and Harrison Butker won it with a short kick with 8 seconds left on the clock.
