It's official! Patrick Dempsey is PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive for 2023.

The highly-anticipated news was announced on Tuesday, Nov. 7, when Jimmy Kimmel revealed the hunky star chosen for this year's honor during his late night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!

He even brought out this year's honoree, who noted during the sit down, "I'm just happy they made a decision and it was me this year."

In his cover story, Dempsey played it a little less cool, noting, "I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life. It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”

He even admitted that he thought the news was a "joke," adding, "I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing."

The Enchanted actor further quipped, "I’ve always been the bridesmaid!"

Dempsey was handed the Sexiest Man Alive torch from last year's winner, Chris Evans, who took over the crown from his Marvel co-star and the 2021 honoree, Paul Rudd. In other recent years, the publication named the Sexiest Man Alive as Michael B. Jordan (2020), John Legend (2019), Idris Elba (2018), Blake Shelton (2017), and more heartthrobs dating all the way back to 1985.

Even though the editors at PEOPLE are ultimately in charge of choosing who will appear on the cover of the issue, readers were able to cast their own votes in a series of other categories, including sexiest TV star, sexiest musician, sexiest first-time dad, sexiest funny guy and more.

The Reader's Choice poll also included a category for sexiest grandpa, featuring none other than fan-favorite Today show personality Al Roker. The 69-year-old weatherman is up for the honor alongside fellow nominees, Michael Douglas, Kurt Russell and Pierce Brosnan.

Roker's Today show co-star Craig Melvin also earned himself a spot in one of the categories, as he is up for sexiest morning show host, along with Mark Consuelos, Nate Burleson and George Stephanopoulos.

Other categories include sexiest TV star, featuring Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), James Marsden (Jury Duty), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time) and Will Sharpe (The White Lotus).

For sexiest musician, stars like Harry Styles, Tim McGraw, Bad Bunny and Future are in the running, while the sexiest first-time dad category includes Alexander Ludwig, Brooks Koepka, Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Hiddleston.

Plus, none other than Travis Kelce is nominated in the sexiest athlete category, along with Lewis Hamilton, Shohei Ohtani and Joe Burrow.

The victors of each subcategory will be revealed in full on Nov. 8.
