Paterson man dies of gunshot wounds, bringing city's homicides to 4 for the year

PATERSON — The number of city homicide victims this year climbed to four after a 62-year-old man died Tuesday from injuries he suffered in a May 5 shooting, authorities announced.

The shooting happened just before 10:30 a.m. on Sunday near the corner of Broadway and East 24th Street, officials said.

For almost a year, Broadway has been the focus of a high-profile police crackdown that community leaders say has transformed a thoroughfare long known for lawlessness. Sunday’s shooting happened several blocks to the east of the police operation’s targeted stretch of Broadway.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes identified the victim in Sunday’s shooting as Daryle Robinson, a longtime Paterson resident.

Robinson suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment, later dying from his injuries, officials said.

Paterson activist Ernest Rucker said he knew Robinson well.

“He was one of the nicest guys I knew,” Rucker said. “He would give you the shirt off his back.”

He described Robinson as an entrepreneur who sold clothing and other items.

“It’s a loss for our community,” Rucker said. “He would help anyone.”

Through Sunday, Paterson has seen a slight decrease in the number of shootings compared with the same period in 2023, with the number of incidents declining from 24 to 22, while the number of victims has dropped from 36 to 29, according to Police Department statistics.
