Pat Sajak Apologizes for ‘Terrible Prank’ After Puzzle Baffles All ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestants

Pat Sajak on 'Wheel of Fortune'

Pat Sajak offered the Wheel of Fortune contestants competing on the 2023 Halloween episode an apology after a puzzle left all of them completely bewildered.

During the Tuesday, Oct. 31 episode, the Crossword Round puzzle came up, with the connecting clue being "Magical Words." The competitors were able to discover two of the three words, "Hocus-Pocus" and "Wish," but the final word—a four-letter word with "in" in the middle—was still a mystery.

The round had a lot of ups and downs, as contestant Miles Glasscock also lost all of his winnings by risking it on a wedge with a possible $10,000 under it, only to find a Bankrupt wedge instead, with Sajak saying, “Everything goes in the compost. I’m sorry."

Fellow contestants Jamie Seaberg and Brandian Bufford still didn't solve the puzzle by the time it came back around to Glasscock, and he ended up finally guessing "J" and correcting solving the puzzle as "Wish, Jinx, Hocus-Pocus.”

After such a difficult round, the contestants were likely happy to move on, and Sajak apologized for the struggle, saying, “What a terrible Halloween prank to play on these nice people.”

It appeared that some fans were also frustrated with the puzzle, with someone tweeting in response, "@WheelofFortune Jinx is NOT a magical word."

As the episode went on, Seaberg officially secured the lead, and she went into the bonus round. Although she was unable to get the final puzzle correct and earn an extra $40,000, she still went home with $21,020.

Since this was Wheel of Fortune's Halloween episode, Sajak and co-host Vanna White also hosted a mini trick-or-treating session to end the show, with Maggie Sajak leading a bunch of the crew's kids out in costume to get some candy.
