Passenger entered cockpit and damaged plane before takeoff, American Airlines says

Turbulence transpired before takeoff on an American Airlines flight Tuesday when a passenger damaged the plane, a representative for the airline said.

The incident occurred in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, when the passenger, who was not identified, entered the plane’s “open flight deck,” the airline confirmed to the Daily News.

“Crew members intervened and the individual was ultimately apprehended by local law enforcement,” American Airlines said in a statement.

The plane had been scheduled to fly to Miami.

“A replacement aircraft was sent to Honduras and the flight departed at approximately 11:00pm local time yesterday,” American Airlines said.

The airline didn’t specify the type or extent of damage that the passenger caused to the plane during the incident.

“We applaud our outstanding crew members for their professionalism in handling a difficult situation,” the statement from American Airlines concluded.
