’A party where everyone is screaming:’ Trump impersonater Alec Baldwin bans himself from Twitter

Alec Baldwin is breaking up with Twitter, and it’s got nothing to do with the banning of his nemesis-muse, Donald Trump.

In the fallout after the kerfuffle over wife Hilaria Baldwin’s heritage – Spanish or not? – the actor announced he was ditching the platform as he would a bad party.

“Twitter is like a party where everyone is screaming,” he tweeted. “Not much of a party. Goodbye for now.”

Baldwin’s move is the latest iteration of a scandal sparked Dec. 21, when someone tweeted that Hilaria Baldwin had faked claims of Spanish heritage, calling her a decade-long “grifter.” The tweet cited as evidence a set of varying accents from the former dancer and now mom of five, as well as a podcaster, author and yoga instructor. She has been married to Alec Baldwin since 2012.

Hilaria Baldwin’s faux-heritage unraveled from there, though she did emphasize her legit ties to Spain and her love of the culture. Her parents retired there after spending years in that country on holiday and extended stays, she later clarified, and her brother lives there as well.

She addressed the charges directly just after Christmas, clarifying on Instagram that, though she’d been born in Boston, she grew up spending time between Massachusetts and Spain.

Two days after that post, her husband lashed out against further criticism, telling an Instagram snarker to “go f—k yourself.”

Last week, Alec Baldwin seemed ready to start decluttering, declaring that the coronavirus lockdown had taught him that “we need less in our lives,” including people.

“The lockdown has taught me that we need less in our lives,” Baldwin tweeted on Jan. 10. “Less clothes, less talk, less food, less media. Above all, less people.”

So it is that just eight days later, he is apparently making good on his promise.
