Participating in Dry January? Here are 12 Springfield bars offering non-alcoholic options

Buzzed out with the slew of drinks that come with the holiday season — spiked eggnog, mulled wine and champagne? Good news, Dry January is in full swing.

Established by Alcohol Change UK in 2014, Dry January is a campaign that challenges adults to abstain from alcohol consumption throughout the month of January. With the rising popularity of non-alcoholic beers and mocktails, participating in Dry January is becoming easier.

According to the American Association for Cancer Research, 15% of adults in the United States plan on participating in Dry January. Though non-alcoholic options tend to be more available, participation is actually down from the 19% reported in 2022.

In recent years, popular alcohol brands have released non-alcohol options like Bud Zero, Heineken 0.0 and Guinness 0.0. And some brands, like Athletic Brewing Co., are dedicated solely to making tasty non-alcoholic options that provide a similar experience to traditional beer.

Whether you're interested in trying out a non-alcoholic beer or a more classic mocktail, Springfield breweries and bars have your back. The News-Leader compiled a list of 12 businesses offering non-alcoholic options throughout Dry January. The following list is not comprehensive, as many bars and breweries serve non-alcoholic beers and mocktails year-round. If you are curious whether or not your favorite business is offering any specials, check their social media or contact them directly.

Know the terminology: ABV

Commonly referred to as ABV, alcohol by volume is a standard measure of how much alcohol a beverage contains. Beverages with less than 0.5% ABV are considered "non-alcoholic." For context, most regular 12-ounce cans of beer contain about 5% ABV.

Spring Branch Kombucha

Looking for something brewed right here in the Ozarks? Look no further than Spring Branch Kombucha. Established in 2018, Spring Branch Kombucha offers a variety of tasty fermented teas, brewed in Springfield.

Kombucha, for those unfamiliar, is a fermented tea that was first brewed in China about 2,000 years ago. The product became popular in Europe throughout the 20th century and has been growing in popularity in the United States alongside mainstream wellness culture. Kombucha's main ingredients are yeast, sugar and black tea, which sit and ferment for at least a week. During this "brewing," bacteria and acids form in the mixture, as well as a small amount of alcohol (not enough to be considered an alcoholic beverage though), according to WebMD. Kombucha bacteria includes lactic-acid, which works well as a probiotic.

Spring Branch Kombucha's core flavors are Apple Pie, Blueberry Thyme, Cucumber Jalapeno Mint, Elderberry Ginger, Hopped Lime, Lavender, Lemon Hops, Raspberry Basil and Strawberry Rose. Limited releases available right now include Ginger and Peach Mint.

Spring Branch Kombucha is available on tap at several bars and breweries throughout the Ozarks and in cans at several grocery stores. The product can also be purchased on the Spring Branch Kombucha website.
