This part of downtown Puyallup is going to become school parking. Here’s the plan

Plans to expand parking at Puyallup High School are in the works.

The Puyallup School Board unanimously voted Monday during a school board meeting to approve a resolution to purchase a piece of property next to Puyallup High School.

The property at 524 West Main is 5,600 square feet. This will give the school additional onsite parking.

“This is a good idea,” student representative Alejandra Gonzalez said during the meeting.

The property has a $235,000 price tag. The school district will use money from its capital projects fund. District spokesperson Sarah Gillispie wrote in an email that the district: “has not completed a design or calculated a parking stall yield.”

The school district doesn’t have a timeline yet for when the new parking spaces will be available to use.

Facilities Planning Director Brian Devereux said during the meeting that there are plans to demolish the existing home on the property as it is in “poor condition.”

School district staff became aware in early 2022 that the property owner was preparing to sell it. The property owner signed the purchase and sale agreement prior to the school board meeting.

The school district’s capital facilities plan mentions that land acquisition is a priority to help keep up with “a projected enrollment increase,” and that district staff will work with property owners nearby “to increase the footprint of the high school campus.”
