The opening ceremony for the Summer 2024 Olympics will take place outside a stadium, a first time occurence for a Summer Olympics.

Instead, the ceremony will be held in the heart of the city along the Seine, the river that runs through the city. The parade of athletes will take place on the river, with boats for each national delegation.

  • Session: Depending on the sport (and discipline), a session includes one or more competitions over a given period of time.

    • Example: A session of handball includes one or more matches.

How do I get tickets to attend the Olympics?

To purchase official tickets for the 2024 Olympic Games, head to olympics.com/en/paris-2024/spectator/tickets where you can find tickets for the more than 750 sessions, travel packages and hospitality packages.

The Olympics website suggests that attendees only buy from official sources as access can be denied by the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee.

Re-selling tickets outside the official channels is an offense under French law.

What sports are in the Summer Olympics?

The Summer 2024 Olympics will feature 32 sports, including track and field, archery, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, diving, golf, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, wrestling and more.

What new sports will be in the 2024 Olympics?

Three sports that debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing, will be at the Paris Olympics as well as one new sport: breaking.

Breaking is defined by the Olympics as a "young, acrobatic and urban sport" with American roots.

"Originating from hip-hop culture, it was born in the USA during the 1970s at block parties across the Bronx, New York City," according to the Olympics website.

The event is all about the athlete's adaptability to improvise to the beat of the DJ's tracks. This event is scored based on votes from the judges. For its Paris debut, there will be two one-on-one battles events.
