New Parents Welcome Biggest Baby on Record in 13 Years

Newborns at the hospital

In late October, a newly-delivered baby boy tipped the scales at over 14 and 1/2 pounds—nearly twice the size of an average newborn.

Britteney Ayres gave birth to her fifth child, a son named Sonny, via C-section on Oct. 23, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Ontario, Canada. And although doctors predicted he would be a large baby, they did not expect him to be a record-breaking size.

"Oh, it was dumbfounding," Sonny's father, Chance Ayres, told Fox News Digital.

"It was a mind-blowing experience," he added. "The way the doctors and nurses were cheering. It was like the [Toronto] Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. It was insane. Everybody was jumping and screaming. It was fun."

At 14 pounds, 8 ounces (and roughly 21.65 inches long), Sonny is the heaviest baby born at the hospital since at least 2010.

The Guinness Book of World Records, meanwhile, lists the heaviest newborn birth on record at 22 pounds. Unfortunately, that infant died less than a day after their birth in Seville, Ohio, on Jan. 19, 1879.

In comparison, an average-sized newborn weighs between 7 pounds, 2 ounces and 7 pounds, 6 ounces, per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

Baby Sonny joins three older brothers and one older sister: Chance, 6, Everett, 5, Lucky, 3, and Marigold. And although two of his siblings weighed over 13 pounds (one of them was 13 pounds, 14 ounces!) at birth, the doctor who delivered Sonny was shocked by his size.

"I have not delivered such a big baby before and have not seen one delivered even throughout my training," Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe told Fox News Digital.

"In general, what predicts a big baby is genetics, post dates and poorly controlled diabetes," the obstetrician-gynecologist explained. "But to be sure, Britteney did not have any diabetes during this pregnancy. I think she simply makes big babies."

For those who are curious, Sonny's big personality matches his size.

Chance told Good Morning America: "He's our last one ... a ray of sunshine. He's beautiful."

The doting dad added: "Anyone that sees them has an enormous smile, even if they don't recognize [him] from the news. They still see him and say, 'Wow, what a baby that is.'"
