It has been seventeen years since Paranormal Activity popularized the found footage genre, and we’re only now getting a game based on it. DarkStone Digital, an indie horror game developer, has announced that a new game, Paranormal Activity: Found Footage, is in development for multiple platforms.

DarkStone Digital is known for games like The Mortuary Assistant, Our Secret Below, and Kohate, all featuring first-person atmospheric horror with some puzzle elements. DarkStone released a teaser accompanying the game’s announcement, although it doesn’t contain any actual in-game footage. In fact, it doesn’t contain any footage at all, instead relying on the franchise’s signature style of digital glitches and just text.

Going by the developer’s previous games, it should be safe to assume that Paranormal Activity will feature first-person gameplay. That doesn’t sound like a good fit for the franchise, which has relied heavily on digital and security camera footage for its storytelling. But hey, The Mortuary Assistant is sitting with a “Very Positive” aggregate verdict on Steam, with nearly 5000 positive reviews so maybe DarkStone knows what it’s doing.

Not much is known about the game, but director Brian Clarke does mention a “Haunt system” that will “dynamically alter the types and intensity of scares players will encounter based on their actions.” Whatever that means.

“We are thrilled to work with Paramount Game Studios and to have the opportunity to bring the world of Paranormal Activity to gamers everywhere,” said Patrick Ewald, CEO of Epic Pictures and producer at DreadXP. “The films are steeped in rich lore and creative scares, and under the stewardship of creative director Brian Clarke, DreadXP’s Paranormal Activity video game will honor those core tenets and offer horror fans one of our most terrifying games yet.”

“The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise epitomizes the power and reach of the horror genre,” said Brian Clarke, co-director and creative director at DreadXP. “If you thought The Mortuary Assistant was scary, we’re taking what we learned during the development of that title and cranking it up with a more reactive and horrifying haunting system. It’s going to be intense!”

The Paranormal Activity franchise includes seven feature films, all of which have collectively grossed over $890 million USD worldwide. This won't be the first time that the series gets a video game adaptation, as Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul was released for PlayStation VR in 2017, with a non-VR version available on PC as well.

Generally speaking, the franchise has been on a downward spiral both critically and commercially after the original trilogy, so here’s hoping that the game revitalizes the series.
