Ovid-Elsie's Kathryn Thornton is this week's LSJ 'Student of the Week'

School districts across the Lansing area nominated students to be recognized as high achievers in the Lansing State Journal.

This week’s Student of the Week contest featured three high school students from Ovid-Elsie High School, Lansing Christian School and DeWitt High School.

The next poll will be active Monday, May 13, at 7 a.m.

Winner: Kathryn Thornton, Ovid-Elsie High School

Kathryn is a junior at Ovid-Elsie High School. She participates in dual enrollment at Lansing Community College and takes Advanced Placement classes at the high school. She is the junior class president and was voted the school's National Honor Society president for next year. Kathryn is a current member of NHS and on the school's softball team, and she spends her time tutoring other students.

Other students recognized:

Abbi Pelle, Lansing Christian School: Abbi is a junior at Lansing Christian School. She was recently the lead role in the school's musical. She has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the NHS. Abbi is in the high school band and on both the varsity basketball and volleyball teams. She tutors other high school students in the math program and outside of school, Abbi is a volunteer in the youth program at her church. Abbi's teacher and counselor Katherine Lohman said Abbi is "thoughtful, curious, and dedicated both inside and outside of the classroom, and she inspires others to embody those traits as well."

Parker Havard, DeWitt High School: Parker is president of the school's student government, competes on the varsity tennis team and coordinates numerous school and community charity events. Parker is also a member of the school's National Honor Society and maintains a 3.98 GPA. The principal of DeWitt High School, Matt Dodson, said the school will miss Parker's leadership qualities when he graduates in June. Parker will attend MSU to study music this fall.
