Over 100 Animators Remade An Episode Of Japanese Spider-Man

Japanese Spiderman Reanimated 2023

If you think you know what Spider-Man is like, you might be shocked to see what Japanese Spider-Man is like. It’s a glorious take on Spider-Man, a tokusatsu series like Ultraman or Super Sentai (which Power Rangers is based on) that takes a lot of liberties, to say the least. You could actually watch it on the Marvel website for a while, but it’s since been taken down.

Don’t worry though, there’s something even better. It’s a fan project from an Australian collaborative animation group called Reanimation Station, and it fully recreates an entire episode of the classic series with the help of over 100 animators — 118, to be exact. For full disclosure, I am close friends with one of the dozens of animators on this project, but I’d have shared it even if I wasn’t because it’s incredible.

Each animator was given a short clip from the show, with clips lasting a few seconds each, and told to remake it in their own signature style. As a result, there are dozens of different styles on display, with some being a little more anime-inspired, some taking on the vibe of 80’s cartoons, and others being fully 3D animated. There are even some amazing live-action sequences thrown in there, and it’s all fantastic.

You can tell a lot of work went into the project from all of the animators, and the end result is glorious, if a little disjointed. What can you expect though? This is a 24-minute episode of TV broken up into tiny sections, recreated by different artists, and stitched back together. Cohesiveness isn’t really the name of the game here, instead it’s a pure showcase of talent (and plenty of memes).

This isn’t the first Reanimated project that Reanimation Station has worked on either. Last year, the group coordinated the recreation of an episode of the classic Adam West Batman series, with the help of over 70 animators. It’s not as long, coming in at just over 18 minutes, but it is similarly fantastic.

So what’s next for Reanimation Station? It’s hard to say. But given how fantastic the first two projects are, there are going to be a lot of people waiting with bated breath to see what happens next year.
