OU basketball: Sooners guard Otega Oweh plans to enter NCAA transfer portal, per report

NORMAN — Sophomore guard Otega Oweh plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he tells On3's Joe Tipton.

Oweh averaged 11.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and one assist per game while starting 28 games for the Sooners this season. He also shot 49.3% from the field.

The Newark, New Jersey, native signed with OU as a four-star recruit in the 2022 class. In his Oklahoma career, Oweh averaged 8.3 points, three rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.

Oweh was expected to be a significant contributor for Porter Moser, along with fellow 2022 four-star signee Milos Uzan, who has yet to express his plans for next season. Oweh started Oklahoma's first 27 games, before he was benched for Oregon transfer Rivaldo Soares on Feb. 28.

Seniors Le’Tre Darthard, Maks Klanjseck and Soares are all out of eligibility. Sam Godwin has an extra year of eligibility remaining due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it's unclear whether or not he'll return to Norman.

OU has reportedly contacted Cowley JUCO's Jeff Nwankwo, Drexel's Amari Williams, Georgetown's Rowan Brumbaugh, Stanford's Kanaan Carlyle in the transfer portal, among others. Oklahoma showed reportedly showed interest in UT Martin's Jacob Crews before he committed to Missouri out of the portal last week.

While the amount of NIL dollars a program has to use in the portal is a difficult thing to measure in college sports, Moser offered a glimpse into the Sooners’ situation last week, saying this season was the first where he felt like “we really had some,” adding “we made a huge jump.”

Oweh is the first Sooners player to enter the portal following their shocking omission from the NCAA Tournament. OU finished its season 20-12 and was the final team left out of the tournament.
