Other Jan. 10-16 highlights for Watertown, Aberdeen Central athletes

Sixty-two just isn't a good number for Watertown High School's boys basketball team.

The Arrows jumped into the state Class AA rankings at No. 4 last week before losing 64-62 at Aberdeen Central on a 3-pointer at the buzzer. On Tuesday, the Arrows (5-4) scored 62 points again and lost to Class A Tea Area 63-62 in overtime in the Watertown Civic Arena.

Watertown trailed 52-47 with 3:13 remaining before going on a 10-1 run to lead 57-53 after Dylon Rawdon's two free throws with 17.3 seconds remaining. Tea Area rallied with a layup by Marshall Smythe with 13.7 seconds remaining and after a steal, tied the game on Brenner Konrad's layup with 5.4 seconds left in regulation.

Jessen Wiebenga's 3-pointer early in overtime put Tea Area ahead for good, although Watertown used two 3-pointers by Kohen Kranz in the final 21 seconds to get within 63-62 with 5.6 seconds left. Tea Area missed two free throws with 2.4 seconds left but the Arrows weren't able to get off a shot.

Rawdon and Kranz each scored 21 points for the Arrows. Jake Olson added 10 and Caden Beauchamp eight. Rawdon also dished out eight assists. Watertown shot 53 percent (24 of 45 from the field).

Sam Almas tallied 24 points and nine assists for Tea Area (5-4), which also got eight points apiece from Jesse, Garrett and Griffin Wiebenga. The Titans shot 59 percent (24 of 41) from the field.

Watertown's girls lost 50-32 at No. 2 Class A Tea Area on Tuesday, falling to 2-7 on the season.

Emery Thury's 10 points and 11 rebounds paced the Arrows, who shot only 28 percent (12 of 43) from the field. Miranda Falconer scored seven points and Jade Lund five.

Katie Vasecka produced 17 points and seven rebounds, Mara Grant 12 and 11 and Ellie Clayberg 10 points for the Titans (9-1). Tea Area canned 18 of 42 field-goal attempts for 43 percent.

Watertown's teams were also scheduled to play Yankton last Friday, but those games were postponed to Tuesday, Feb. 20 (girls at home, boys at Yankton).

The Arrows host Rapid City Stevens on Friday (6:30 p.m. girls, 7:30 p.m. boys) and Rapid City Central on Saturday (1 p.m. girls, 2:30 p.m. boys).

Aberdeen Central Basketball

Aberdeen Central's teams had games against Tea Area postponed by the weather on Saturday and returned to action with games against O'Gorman on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagle girls, who are rated fifth in Class AA, slipped to 8-2 with a 64-27 road loss at No. 1 O'Gorman. The Golden Eagle boys slipped to 5-5 with a 50-39 home loss to fourth-rated O'Gorman.

Taryn Hermansen scored 13 points and Caydi Withers eight for Aberdeen Central's girls. Grant Fritz had nine and Parker Lemer seven for Aberdeen Central's boys. Brendan Phillips hauled in six rebounds.

Aberdeen Central's girls visit Tea Area in a makeup game at 7 p.m. on Thursday and host Brandon Valley on Saturday at 3 p.m. Aberdeen Central's boys host Tea Area at 7 p.m. on Thursday and visit Brandon Valley on Saturday.

Watertown Hockey

The weekend weather didn't really slow down the Watertown Lakers' varsity hockey teams. The boys' game against Brandon Valley on Saturday in Sioux Falls was postponed but the Lakers did notch a 6-0 win at Sioux Center (Iowa) on Saturday. The Laker girls went 1-2-1 in the Kansas City (Mo.) Showdown Tournament.

Jake Bramer had two goals and two assists in Sunday's win for the Laker boys, who evened their South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association record to 5-5. Austin McBride also tallied two goals and Tyler Roberts and Hudson Hendricks on each. Mylan Evans and Tommy Foley also added assists and goalie Caleb Schmaltz recorded seven saves.

The Laker girls, who are 0-8 in the SDAHA, did beat the Kansas City Storm 4-1 and tie the Carriage Club at Kansas City. They also lost to the St. Louis Cyclones 4-3 and the Chesterfield Falcons 5-2.

The Watertown teams host Rushmore this weekend in the Maas Ice Arena. The boys host Ruchmore at 8 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The girls host Rushmore at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Aberdeen Hockey

The Aberdeen Cougar boys suffered 7-2 and 6-2 home lposses to the Rushmore Thunder over the weekend, falling to 7-5 in SDAHA play.

Quincy Madsen scored a goal in each game and Aiden Posthumus anjd Levi Little also found the net. Cameron Backous, Drake Witte, Talan Dutenhoeffer and Micah Kranzler each had assists. Goalie Colton Townsend tallied 59 saves in the two games.

The Cougar girls had a game at Sioux Falls postpoined on Saturday and then fell 1-0 at Brookings on Sunday. Chloe Vikander made 11 saves in net for Aberdeen, which fell to 7-2 in SDAHA play.

Aberdeen's boys visit Huron at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The girls play in a three-day tournament at Brookings this weekend.

Watertown Wrestling

It turned out to be a light week for the Arrow wrestlers. The girls didn't compete at all after having the Battle at the 'Burg tournament at Harrisburg cancelled on Friday.

The Arrow boys suffered a 47-27 Eastern South Dakota Conference dual loss at Pierre on Friday.

Gage Lohr, Sloan Johannsen, Cooper Kettwig, Markus Pitkin and Micah Hach each recorded wins for Watertown. Johannsen and Kettwig each won by fall.

Watertown was slated to compete Saturday in the Jerry Opbroek Invitational at Mitchell but that tournament was also cancelled by the weather.

The Arrows are scheduled to wrestle in a dual at Milbank on Thursday and also in a triangular at Mitchell on Friday that will also incude Brandon Valley. Watertown's schedule also includes the Bishop Heelan Tourney on Saturday at Sioux City (Iowa), but the Arrows sent their junior varsity last winter.

Aberdeen Wrestling

The Goldeen Eagles' team didn't compete at all last week, after having a triangular at Yankton on Thursday postponed to Jan. 23.

The girls were also scheuled to compete in the Battle of the 'Burg at Harrisburg, which was cancelled on Friday. The boys were slated to compete in the Harrisburg Duals on Saturday, but that event was also cancelled.

Aberdeen Central's girls are slated to compete in the Pierre Invitational on Friday with the boys also head to Pierre on Saturday for the East-West Duals.

Gymnastics

Both Watertown and Aberdeen Central's gymnastics teams didn't compete last week because of the weather.

The Arrow girls were slated to compete in the Huron Invitational, which was postponed on Friday.

The Golden Eagle girls were set to compete in a quad at Pierre, which was cancelled on Saturday.

There could be some schedule changes coming, but Watertown is currently scheduled to compete in a triangular on Monday at Brookings that will also include Harrisburg.

Aberdeen Central isn't scheduled to compete until Thursday, Jan. 25 when it participates in a triangular hosted by Watertown.
