Oscars 2024: Emma Stone Wins Best Actress for Poor Things
Oscar voters are rating Emma Stone’s performance as anything but poor: The actress took home the trophy for Best Actress for her performance in Poor Things at Sunday’s Oscars ceremony.
In her acceptance speech, a hoarse-voiced Stone immediately confessed: “My dress is broken!” adding: “I think it happened during [Ryan Gosling’s performance of] ‘I’m Just Ken.'” Stone then paid tribute to the esteemed Best Actress presenters, which included former winners like Jessica Lange and Sally Field, and her fellow nominees: “It’s been such a honor to do all of this together. I hope we get to keep doing more together.”
She then admitted to panicking the night before, and her Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos encouraged her to take herself out of it, and that helped her, she remembered: “It’s not about me. It’s abotu a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts, and that’s the best part of making movies.” She also thanked her family, including her husband and her 3-year-old daughter: “I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.”

Stone starred as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, a twisted Frankenstein-esque tale about a dead woman brought back to life with the brain of her unborn infant. The cast also included Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef and Willem Dafoe. Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) directed, with a screenplay by Tony McNamara (The Great).
Stone beat out an accomplished field of nominees in the Best Actress category, including Lily Gladstone, who won a Screen Actors Guild award and a Golden Globe for her work in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Carey Mulligan was also nominated for Maestro, along with Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall and Annette Bening for Nyad.
Poor Things was nominated for a total of 11 Oscars at this year’s ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Lanthimos), Best Adapted Screenplay (for McNamara) and Best Supporting Actor (for Ruffalo). This is Stone’s second Oscar win for Best Actress, with the first coming in 2016 for La La Land. She has also earned two Best Supporting Actress nominations: for Birdman in 2014, and The Favourite in 2018.
