The documentary delves into the work and dedicated coverage of Pulitzer-prize winning Ukrainian journalist Mstyslav Chernov and fellow reporters Evgeniy Maloletka, Vasilisa Stepanenko and Lori Hinnant, all based in the besieged city of Mariupol following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

"As the only international reporters who remain in the city, they capture what later become defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more," reads the official synopsis.

The film makes for emotional viewing, showcasing accounts from civilian's caught up in the siege and additionally highlighting the difficulty in news reporting from a zone of conflict.

"This is the first Oscar in the Ukrainian history," said Chernov, accepting the Academy Award. "And I'm honoured. I'm honoured. But probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say I wish I never made this film.

"I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities. I wish to give all the recognition to Russia not killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all the civilians who are now in their jails.

"But I cannot change the history. I cannot change the past."

As well its multiple award wins, 20 Days in Mariupol has garnered high praise from critics and currently boasts a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The Times called the documentary "impactful and devastating" in their 5-star review, with Wendy Ide of the Observer describing it as "an extremely tough watch, but an important one."
