Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes is recovering and in stable condition after he experienced a “medical event” at an awards ceremony Saturday.

Barnes was at an awards ceremony at Fresno State, where he attended and played basketball, when the medical event occurred, according to The Oregonian. Specifics of that event are not yet known, but Barnes was transported to a local hospital. The 60-year-old was able to communicate with family members and medical staff throughout the day Sunday, too, which was another great sign.

“All of us within the Oregon State University community are very grateful for the medical care that Scott continues to receive and we all are encouraged by the progress in his condition that is being seen,” Oregon State president Jayathi Y. Murthy said in a statement, via The Oregonian. “Scott and his family are beloved members of the OSU community. His contributions to the university and OSU Athletics are significant and benefit so many.”

Barnes took over as Oregon State’s athletic director in 2017. He’s held the same post at Humboldt State, Eastern Washington, Utah State and most recently at Pittsburgh.

Among other things, Barnes hired coach Jonathan Smith to take over the football program. The Beavers went 10-3 last season, which marked just the third time in program history they’ve had a 10-win season. He’s also led a project to renovate Reser Stadium.

"Scott Barnes is a dear friend, trusted colleague and incredibly loved man across the Oregon State and Pac-12 families and the entire college sports community," the Pac-12 said in a statement Sunday. "Our thoughts are with Scott and his family at this time."
