Opening night: What you need to know as Fayetteville Woodpeckers start season at Segra

The Fayetteville Woodpeckers open their fifth season in Segra Stadium as the Houston Astros' Single-A Minor League Baseball affiliate on Tuesday with a 6:05 p.m. game against the Charleston RiverDogs.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re heading to the ballpark for any of the Woodpeckers’ 66 home games this season.

Opening-night fireworks

After Segra welcomes the Woodpeckers back to the roost with Tuesday's home opener, the celebration continues with postgame fireworks.

Thursdays will be big at the ballpark again this season with the return of live music at Healy's before first pitch.

Every Thursday night home game has drink specials at Segra, with 16-ounce domestic beers and 9-ounce wines for $4, and 16-ounce Pepsi products for $2. Or you could always go with the beer bat, a 25-ounce hollowed slugger you can bring back for refills.

The first Thirsty Thursday of the 2024 season also has an 80's Night theme, and patrons are encouraged to dress for the occasion.

The Woodpeckers are introducing 910 Tuesdays, too, when fans can purchase a discounted reserved ticket for $9 and enjoy $1 hot dogs. The first home Tuesday game is excluded from this promotion.

All 11 Friday night games will feature fireworks after the ballgame and every Saturday game features a giveaway.

After Sunday games, kids can run the bases and everyone is invited to play catch in the outfield.

Game-day parking info

Specifically for Woodpeckers home games, paid event parking in downtown city lots will begin 2 hours before first pitch at a cost of $5 per space.

Private parking lots in the downtown area charge their own rates.

Season structure

The Woodpeckers will play 132 games in the Class Low-A Carolina League, where they share the South Division with the Augusta GreenJackets (Braves), Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), Columbia Fireflies (Royals), Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox) and Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs).

The North Division of the Carolina League includes the Carolina Mudcats (Brewers), Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles), Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers), Fredericksburg Nationals, Lynchburg Hillcats (Guardians) and Salem Red Sox.

The Carolina League is one of three Single-A level, along with the California League and the Florida State League.

Teams square off in six-game series played on consecutive days, Tuesday-Sunday. Mondays are off days. The Woodpeckers typically host two series every month until the regular season ends Sept. 8.

Fayetteville Woodpeckers players to watch

Fourteen position players and 16 pitchers make up the 2024 Woodpeckers roster, with three of the Astros' top-30 prospects, according to MLB.com, playing for Fayetteville.

Waner Luciano (3B/OF) a 19-year-old slugger from Dominican Republic is ranked No. 18 on Houston's prospect list. He was a Rookie-level Dominican Summer League All-Star and then ranked second in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League with 10 homers after coming to the US last summer.

Alimber Santa, a right-handed pitcher ranked No. 25 on the prospect list, struck out 119 batters in 87⅓ innings for the Woodpeckers last season. He's back for '24 with a fastball that can hit triple digits.

Chase Jaworsky is ranked No. 28. A fifth-round pick out of high school last year, the shortstop had signed to play at Utah Valley State before going pro.

Other returning players from last season's Pecks include Yamal Encarnacion (INF), Luis Perez (OF), Juan Santander (C), Amilcar Chirinos (RHP), Sandy Mejia (RHP) and Ethan Pecko (RHP).

Ticket prices

Single-game ticket prices range from $11-$25, with berm seating for ages 3-12 at $9.

Four-Topps (table and stools) cost $100 for a group of four or $25 each.

Season tickets are available for full-season membership (66 games), half-season (20 games) and 12-game flex memberships with prices varying depending on seat location.
