Strawberries should come with a warning label that says “Handle With Care.” Unlike thick-skinned fruits like bananas and oranges, they are delicate, tender, and highly perishable. Storing them properly and using them quickly, before they spoil, is key. But when they are in season, and freshly-picked, they are oh, so worth the trouble.

The experts at the Florida Strawberry Growers Association (FSGA) have a few guidelines on the best way to store strawberries so you can savor every single one.

Use Them Before You Lose Them

  • Ideal timing: Within 3 to 4 days

Strawberries have a short shelf life, especially ones from your garden or smaller varieties sold at farmers’ markets. For the best flavor and texture, plan to eat the fruit within three to four days. Or the same day, ideally.

Store In The Drawer

  • How to prep: When you get the berries home, do not wash them or remove stems and leaves until you are ready to use them.

  • Storing in plastic container: If they come packaged in a plastic container, keep them in there, and place the container in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.

  • Storing in basket: If your berries come in a produce basket rather than a plastic container, the FSHA suggests placing them in a partially opened plastic bag inside the crisper.

  • Benefits of the crisper: This drawer has an air vent that allows you to control the amount of humidity.

Tips

According to the FSGA, strawberries last longer when stored in a humid environment, so you’ll want to close the vent.

Enjoy At Room Temperature

When you are ready to eat your berries, having a little patience will pay off. The FSGA says strawberries taste best when they are at room temperature. After removing them from the fridge, let them sit on the counter to warm up for 30 minutes so they will become even more juicy and fragrant.
