The Durham Fire Department is investigating a Sunday morning apartment fire that left one person dead.

The Durham Fire Department and Durham County EMS responded at 8:28 a.m. Sunday to a report of a person trapped in an apartment that was on fire on Wood Cottage Court. When the 28 firefighters and five EMS personnel arrived, they found a three-story wood framed apartment building with nothing visible from the outside.

But when firefighters investigated, they found an apartment that had a smell of smoke so they forced the door. They went inside with a fire hose line to quickly extinguish the fire.

The victim was found inside the apartment. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

Fire officials said there was smoke throughout the apartment and a small amount of water damage to the apartment below.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
