One person was killed in a head-on crash with a school bus near the North Carolina coast, officials said.

Currituck County rescue crews were called to the crash site and found someone trapped in a small car on Thursday, Sept. 1. The car had collided head on with a school bus from neighboring Camden County, first responders wrote on Facebook.

The Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department said it responded at about 10 a.m. to a scene in Shawboro, roughly 175 miles northeast of Raleigh. The crash was reported along Shortcut Road, also known as U.S. Highway 158.

“Upon units’ arrival, they found a passenger vehicle with heavy damage, with one critical patient entrapped, and a school bus with major front end damage,” the Currituck County Department of Fire and EMS wrote in a Facebook post.

Crews extracted the person from the car and requested an air ambulance. The person, who WAVY identified as the driver, died at the scene from crash-related injuries, officials said.

First responders reported that everyone got off the school bus. The bus driver and a student who had been on board were OK but went to a hospital out of caution, Camden County Schools told McClatchy News in an emailed statement.

“The bus driver for Camden County Schools has not been charged,” the district wrote.

As of Sept. 1, Currituck County officials said an N.C. State Highway Patrol investigation was ongoing.

State troopers didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Sept. 2.

While the crash happened inland, Currituck County is home to part of the Outer Banks barrier islands.
