One killed, another injured in Nashua apartment house fire

Apr. 27—NASHUA — A two-alarm fire that heavily damaged a multi-unit apartment building on Cross Street has claimed the life of one person and sent another to the hospital with serious injuries.

Flames broke out shortly after 7 a.m., and the first firefighters to arrive reported heavy fire on the second floor at 26 Cross St., according to a news release from Nashua Fire Rescue. One occupant suffered burns but was able to evacuate the 2 1/2 -story multifamily home. That occupant was transported to a local hospital, and another was found dead inside.

Heavy smoke and fire damage occurred throughout the building and the Red Cross was called to help displaced residents, according to Nashua Fire Rescue.

The identity and cause of death of the person who died will be determined by the State Medical Examiner.

The fire's cause is being investigated by the state Fire Marshal's Office and the fire marshal for the city of Nashua.

Nashua Fire Rescue advised people to leave a building immediately when a smoke detector sounds, and to close the doors on their way out.
