One killed, another injured in New Brunswick shooting: prosecutor

NEW BRUNSWICK – A 23-year-old city man was killed and another man was injured in a shooting Tuesday evening in the area of Throop Avenue and Delavan Street.

The man who died has been identified as Numi Simmons, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.

Around 6:53 p.m. Tuesday police responded to a shooting in the area of Throop Avenue and Delavan Street. When officers arrived, they found two men, both with gunshot injuries, who were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Ciccone said.

Simmons died from his injuries and the other man is listed in critical condition, the prosecutor said.

A preliminary investigation indicates this was not a random shooting and there does not appear to be a threat to the public, according to the prosecutor.

Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to contact New Brunswick Detective Sean Freeman at 732-745-5200 or Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Michelle Coppola at 732-745-3477.
