The one endorsement Rep. Carolyn Maloney absolutely, positively did not want to get: Rep. Matt Gaetz

When you’re locked in a tight primary fight like Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), you’re probably happy to pick up all the endorsements you can get.

Unless it comes from one of the most ardent Trump supporters in Congress, namely Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) who loves guns, hates abortion, and says the violent extremists who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 were peaceful protesters.

He is also under federal investigation in a fraud and influence-peddling scheme involving underage escorts on a junket to the Bahamas.

Yet, Gaetz is #TeamMaloney in the Manhattan Democratic cage fight between the Manhattan liberal and colleague, Rep. Jerrod Nadler (D-N.Y.)

“I really hope Maloney wins,” Gaetz tweeted. “Nadler is the worst.”

Gaetz didn’t elaborate on his endorsement, although Nadler is particularly hated by the far right wing for presiding over Trump’s second impeachment.

For his part, Nadler is happy to remind anyone about Gaetz’s effort to meddle in the Democratic infighting.

“Oh no!! Not sure how I’ll win my #NY12 primary without grassroots insurrectionist support,” Nadler said.

Nadler and Maloney running neck and neck: poll

Maloney, on the other hand, isn’t embracing the endorsement.

“Matt Gaetz is not worth commenting on,” said Bob Liff, a spokesman for Maloney.

Maloney and Nadler face off in a debate Tuesday along with fellow Democratic candidate Suraj Patel. The trio will battle in an Aug. 23 primary with the winner almost certain to take the seat come November.

The two Democratic heavyweights were dumped into the same district when a judge tossed out a Democratic-friendly redistricting map and instead created one seat for both their Upper East and Upper West side bases.
