One dead, three injured after stolen car crashes in Des Moines

A car crash that resulted in one death and three injuries has been reported by the Des Moines Police Department just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department, a DMPD detective spotted a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata near Ninth Street and Center Street at approximately 12:42 p.m.

The detective monitored the vehicle as it traveled through downtown Des Moines, where it eventually pulled into McRae Park at 1021 Davis Avenue. After a marked patrol car entered behind it, it sped off onto Davis Avenue eastbound.

Officers did not follow in pursuit because they lost sight of the vehicle.

However, at 12:49 p.m., officers located the Hyundai crashed in the 600 block of Davis Avenue. Officers immediately requested emergency medical services and initiated lifesaving efforts, including CPR, the release said.

One person died at the scene. Des Moines Fire Department medics transported the three other occupants, all critically injured, to local hospitals.

This is the sixth traffic-related fatality crash in Des Moines this year.

The release said Davis Avenue will be closed, S.W. Ninth Street to Courtland Drive, until approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday.
