1 dead, seven injured in shooting at Oklahoma Memorial Day festival

A suspect has surrendered in a deadly shooting at an Oklahoma Memorial Day festival in which one person was killed and seven others injured.

Skyler Buckner, 26, turned himself in at the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office at 4:05 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The eight injured people were all taken to the hospital in Muskogee, and three of them were later transferred to a Tulsa hospital, police in Taft, Oklahoma, said Sunday evening. They did not identify the person who died other than to say she was a “39-year-old Black female,” with the other wounded ranging in age from 9 to 56. One juvenile was injured in the shooting, not two as originally stated, police said.

“All are said to have non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

An apparent argument sparked the fatal incident, police said Sunday.

About 1,500 people were crowded around the Old City Square for the annual event when gunfire broke out just after midnight, investigators said.

Officers with the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office who were in attendance immediately began rendering aid to the victims.
