18-year-old killed after I-440 crash in Raleigh with cement truck, police say

An 18-year-old was killed on Interstate 440 Thursday after the car he was traveling in collided with a Mack Granite truck, Raleigh police said.

Raleigh police said Adam Sulayman Alkanshaly was a passenger in a 2020 Toyota Camry driven by Yaseen Sulayman Alkhanshali, 22.

The Camry and the truck were heading eastbound near Yadkin Drive with Alkhanshali traveling at a “high rate of speed” and switching lanes frequently, police said in a release. Alkhanshali did not slow down and collided with the rear of the cement truck, police said.

The Camry rolled over several times, and Alkanshaly was ejected from the vehicle.

Alkanshaly was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries.

Alkhanshali also was taken to the hospital with “serious injuries.” He has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and speeding.

The truck driver was not injured.

The right shoulder near Exit 13 was closed part of Thursday with traffic diverted to Glenwood Avenue, police said in a tweet.
