One Bibb County school board seat up for grabs in May 2024 election. Here’s who won.

Incumbent Kristin Hanlon prevailed against opponent Barbara Fike in the sole contested race for the Bibb County Board of Education, according to unofficial results from the Georgia secretary of state.

Hanlon won with about 68% of the vote, according to election results.

Hanlon, who will serve her second term on the board in the District 3 seat, said she is honored that voters of the district have shown their support and confidence by reelecting her.

“I am excited to continue the work to move the district forward, driving improvements in academics, technology and infrastructure to improve student achievement and ensure every graduate from Bibb County public schools is prepared to choose their path, whether secondary education, enlistment in the armed services, productive employment or entrepreneurship, and to serve as a productive member of their community,” Hanlon sent in an email to The Telegraph.

Hanlon, 60, is a certified public accountant who is currently a credit risk officer at Citizens Trust Bank in Macon. She started as a volunteer in the school district over 30 years ago. Hanlon said serving as a board member was a chance to take her volunteerism efforts and passion for great public schools to the next level.

For the next four years, Hanlon said her three priorities are to monitor student achievement, increase teachers’ salaries and ensure school programs are funded well enough to meet desired results. That will require decisions around cost-cutting, rezoning and right-sizing of schools, she added.

She said she will also work to address the local schools’ main issues, including student attendance, discipline and safety.

“Companies look to relocate to communities with high-performing school districts, because their employees want to live in places which provide the best opportunities for their families,” she said. “Kids who receive a great education are prepared for the future, and will stay in the community and continue the cycle.”

District 3 is located in South Bibb toward the Middle Georgia Regional Airport. The area houses Porter, Heard, Skyview and Southfield Elementary schools, as well as Rutland Middle and High schools, according to The Macon Newsroom.
