Over 78,700 Texans were without power Friday morning as a result of an Arctic freeze which began sweeping through most of the United States Thursday.

Friday morning Texans used peak energy around 8 a.m. using about 74,000 of the 78,900 megawatts of committed capacity, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas’ supply and demand graph.

Out of the over 78,700 without power Friday, about 20,600 were Oncor customers. Oncor responded to around 800 customers without power in Tarrant County and over 2,200 outages in Dallas County Friday morning.

Oncor spokesperson Connie Piloto previously told the Star-Telegram that Oncor electricians are ready to respond to any outages throughout the winter storm and through the holidays with extra contractors on hand to assist.

Strong wind gusts were the main contributor to power outages Thursday, Piloto said. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth reported winds ranged between 35 to 46 miles per hour in Tarrant County on Thursday.

To prepare for a possible power outage, make sure all electronics are fully charged and have a storm safety kit ready with batteries, a flashlight and a portable radio included.
