What is the old mystical tree face meme? Where did it come from?

A “wise mystical tree” has become a hilarious TikTok meme thanks to some bizarre video game ads that target millennials.

The joke originated on Twitter and dates all the way back to 2017. It all started when mobile game publisher Plarium launched an ad campaign targeting people “over 25” using the image of — you guessed it — a wise, mystical tree.

What is the “wise mystical tree” meme?

In 2017, Plarium advertised three of its mobile games, including Stormfall: Age of War, Vikings: War of Clans and Throne Kingdom at War. The artwork for the ads featured a wise mystical oak tree with a face carved into it, usually with a knight kneeling before it.

But that wasn’t exactly what sparked the meme so much as the ad copy that came with the image. According to Know Your Meme, the mobile ads featured three phrases:

  • If you’re over 25 and own a computer, this game is a must-have!

  • If you own a computer, you must try this game!

  • This game will keep you up all night.

When did the “wise mystical tree” meme start?

As you can see, the ads were ripe for millennials to roast. Back in 2017, the meme first began on Twitter and eventually spread to 4Chan and Reddit.

“Tree, you’re getting awfully pushy right now and I don’t appreciate it,” @snakepixel joked, showing two of the ads, on June 11, 2017.

Why is the “wise mystical tree” meme back in 2022?

The meme resurfaced again on social media in 2022 when @marisagender posted a montage featuring the ads that received over 250,000. However, the account has since been suspended.

A similar roundup of the ads was shared by @JacobKluding shortly after.

“What are you doing there wise mystical tree?”@AyyBasha joked on Twitter, showing the oak at Buckingham Palace.

“Please don’t let this test be yassified face app version of the wise mystical tree, @saint_tripod said, revealing a very much yassified version of the wise mystical tree’s face.
