Several people severely injured in Old Bridge explosion, fire: police

OLD BRIDGE – The Old Bridge Township Police Department is investigating a structure fire on West Greystone Road, where multiple severe injuries were reported.

At about 11:41 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to calls of a loud explosion across from the Jonas Salk Middle School on West Greystone Road. There were additional calls of smoke coming from the commercial building across the street from the school, police said.

The school immediately sheltered in place, police said.

Arriving units advised of a working structure fire with possible entrapment.

Additional police, EMS and fire units responded from Spotswood, East Brunswick, Marlboro and Monroe to assist.

There were multiple severe injuries reported, and two helicopters were called in to fly victims, police said.

Superintendent of Schools David Cittadino said the fire was at the Superior Signal Company across the street from the school.

"It has had no impact on the school, other than placing our students and staff and shelter place," he said. "Everyone on our end is safe."

Additional information will be released as it becomes available, police said.
