Oklahoma weather today: Storms, hail possible but risk for tornadoes decreases

While Oklahoma could still see severe weather Monday afternoon and into Tuesday morning, the risk for tornadoes and other hazards have gone down.

Though risk levels have decreased, the National Weather Service in Norman said "all hazards" are still possible and to "make sure you are weather aware today."

When will storms enter Oklahoma?

Storms could enter southwest Oklahoma as early as 4 p.m., and northwest Oklahoma as early as 6 p.m.

Oklahoma City and central Oklahoma likely won't see any storms until past midnight, starting as early as 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Will there be tornadoes in Oklahoma today?

The risk of tornadoes in western and central Oklahoma is low or very low, the NWS Norman office said.

The risk for severe storms in the area remains "slight," with potential for hail up to baseball size and wind speeds as high as 60 to 80 miles per hour.

Regardless of any particular forecast, here are some things you can do to get ready for Oklahoma's severe weather season.

  • Figure out now where you'll go if you need to seek shelter; there are no public shelters in Oklahoma City.

  • If you have access to a storm shelter, clean it out and get ready to use it.

  • Get a flashlight and spare batteries.

  • If you own a weather radio, make sure it's programmed and working properly.

  • Identify your source for immediate weather information, like from local meteorologists.

  • Sit down with your family and discuss what to do if there is a tornado threat.

  • Do you have pets? Make sure there's a plan to keep your furry friends safe and secure.
