Oklahoma Starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced on X, formerly Twitter, that he intends to enter the transfer portal. Gabriel thanked the coaching staff, fans and players for making his time at OU special.

Gabriel led the Sooners to a 10-2 record and a third-place finish in the Big 12 after a 2022 season in which Oklahoma finished 6-7.

Gabriel will miss the Sooners matchup with the Arizona Wildcats in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28.

Gabriel finished the 2023 season with 3,660 yards, 30 passing touchdowns, 12 rushing touchdowns and six interceptions. Gabriel was sixth in passing yards among all FBS quarterbacks this season.

Gabriel did not start his collegiate career at OU but at UCF where he played his first three seasons before transferring to Oklahoma. Gabriel missed most of his final season with UCF due to a fractured clavicle that limited him to only three games.

When Gabriel transferred to OU in 2022, Jeff Lebby was the Sooner’s offensive coordinator. The pair had previously worked together at UCF in 2019 when Lebby was the offensive coordinator.

Lebby has recently been announced as the head coach of Mississippi State prompting speculation from some that Gabriel could follow.

Gabriel is one of the top players available in the transfer portal and was ranked the No. 1 transfer quarterback by ESPN.

Over his career, Gabriel has thrown for 14,865 yards, 125 passing touchdowns, 26 rushing touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

Gabriel will have one year of eligibility remaining.
