Oklahoma high school track & field storylines, athletes to watch at 2024 6A-5A state meet

The 2024 Oklahoma high school track and field state meet for Classes 6A and 5A is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Western Heights High School.

Here are some Oklahoma City area storylines and athletes to watch.

Top storylines for 2024 Class 6A-5A state track & field meet

Mustang eyes titles in Class 6A. The Broncos’ boys and girls both won the championship at the Norman regional. The girls finished with 217 points as they beat runner-up Edmond North by 88, while the boys finished ahead of Norman North, 160.5-136. This is Shannon Atkinson’s first season at Mustang. The former OU All-American had been at Southmoore before this season.

Edmond Memorial also among contenders in Class 6A. The Bulldogs’ boys and girls teams both won titles at their home regional last week. The boys finished with 202.5 points and well ahead of the competition as Tulsa Lincoln Christian was their closest opponent with 145. Edmond Memorial's girls, who are the defending state champions, won their regional with 217 points, while Lincoln Christian placed second with 193.33.

Carl Albert boys look to win first track state title since 2018. The Titans won the Class 5A title at the Norman regional, finishing with 159 points and 35 ahead of runner-up Lawton MacArthur. The Titans have three state titles in boys track.

Girls athletes to watch at 2024 Class 6A-5A state track & field meet

Kailyn Bratton, Fr., Putnam City: She won the 100-meter dash (12.15 seconds) and 200 (24.84) in Class 6A at the Tulsa Holland Hall regional.

Emily Cloutier, Sr., Mustang: She broke the state record in the pole vault as she cleared 13 feet, 2 inches at the Norman regional. Cloutier is among the main athletes to watch in Class 6A.

De'Yanna Douglas, Sr., Midwest City: She won regional titles in Class 5A at Tulsa Union in the discus (131-8) and shot put (40-1). Douglas broke the state record in the shot put with a toss of 46-9 while competing in Class 6A at last year’s state meet.

Caya Smith, Sr., Putnam West:The OU basketball signee isn’t just a hoops star. She’s also a standout in track and field and most recently won the Class 6A regional title at Norman in the high jump (5-0).

Inara Ukawuba, Sr., Edmond North: The defending Class 6A state champion in the 100 hurdles, Ukawuba won the race in 14.64 at the Norman regional.

Boys athletes to watch at 2024 Class 6A-5A state track & field meet

LaDainian Fields, Sr., Del City: The Oklahoma State football signee won the 100 (10.86) and 200 (22.40) in Class 5A at the Norman regional.

Elijah Green, Sr., Classen SAS: The Tulsa football signee won the Class 5A regional title at Edmond Memorial in the 400 with a time of 48.81. He won the Class 4A state title in the event last season.

Trystan Haynes, Jr., Carl Albert:He committed to play football at OU this week and won the 400 (48.68) in Class 5A at the Norman regional.

Joshua Rammage, Sr., Southmoore: He had an impressive day in Class 6A at the Tulsa Union regional, winning titles in the 800 (1:55.91) and 1,600 (4:22.82).

Brody Woodcock, Sr., Deer Creek: The Tulsa signee won Class 6A regional titles in the 1,600 (4:18.24) and 3,200 (9:06.33) in Norman.
