Which Oklahoma high school football teams are moving to different classifications in 2024?

Four months ahead of Week Zero, many Oklahoma high school football teams have to prepare for significant changes.

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association announced Wednesday the updated football classifications for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years, and several teams have moved.

The OSSAA and the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association are reclassifiying and redistricting football teams in response to a court ruling that voided the OSSAA’s amendments to its rule focused on private schools. But private schools aren’t the only schools affected.

The original classifications used end-of-year enrollment numbers from June 2023, but the OFBCA and OSSAA chose to update classifications with first-quarter numbers from October 2023 to more accurately reflect school populations. The combination of updated enrollment numbers and new private-school placements creates a major shuffle.

Oklahoma City-area public school Deer Creek is bumping up from Class 6A-II to 6A-I, the highest classification, for the first time. Formerly a Class A school, Deer Creek has boomed with an average daily membership of 2,126.26. Average daily membership, or ADM, measures the average number of students at a given school on a daily basis.

Deer Creek has surpassed Southmoore, so the SaberCats are dropping from Class 6A-I to 6A-II. Sapulpa bumps up to Class 6A-II, while Lawton falls to Class 5A.

Putnam West returns to Class 6A-II because of the nullified amendments, while private school Bishop McGuinness falls back to Class 5A. Elgin and Glenpool drop to Class 4A, while Classen SAS and Newcastle hop up to Class 5A.

Private schools Heritage Hall, Tulsa Holland Hall, Tulsa Lincoln Christian, Tulsa Cascia Hall and Tulsa Victory Christian are all set to compete in Class 3A.

Here are the full classifications:
