Oklahoma chocolate milk recalled for sanitizer contamination after being distributed to schools, hospitals

Chocolate milk has been recalled in Oklahoma after accidentally being contaminated with food-grade sanitizers, according to the FDA.

Hiland Dairy recalled the one-half pint (236 mL) 1% low fat chocolate milk produced at its Norman, Oklahoma, facility after eight cases of the dairy product were ruined.

The milk had been shipped to Oklahoma City, the OKC metro, western Oklahoma, Dallas, San Antonio, Texas, and Tyler, Texas.

More than a dozen school districts received the milk, as well as several hospitals.

Fifty minors across three patient care units at the hospital consumed the contaminated milk, St. Anthony hospital told KFOR. Twenty-eight of them have been transferred to Oklahoma Children’s Hospital to be evaluated and monitored by a pediatric gastroenterology specialist.

“At SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, the safety of our patients is a top priority,” the hospital said in a statement.

OU Health said it has treated patients who have ingested a recalled milk. Several have already been discharged and others are awaiting test results for further treatment.

Symptoms can include upset stomachs, irritation of the mouth or throat and even burns, Scott Schaeffer, director of the Oklahoma Center for Poison and Drug Information, told KFOR.

Anyone feeling ill after drinking Hiland Dairy chocolate milk is asked to call a health professional immediately.
