OHSAA track & field: Which central Ohio athletes advanced to state on Day 1 of regional?

Olentangy’s C.J. Sanna made up for last year’s 16th-place finish in the discus in the Division I regional track and field meet.

The sophomore won the event Wednesday, the first day of competition at Pickerington North, with a top throw of 171 feet, 10 inches. Last season, he fouled on two of three attempts and had a top effort of 117-0.

“C.J. started slow,” Olentangy coach Ken Whalen said. “It was very windy conditions for the throwers. It took him awhile to adjust. He got his winning throw on the third attempt in flight 2. ... His main objective was to qualify for state, which he accomplished.”

Sanna, who won the discus and shot put in the District 2 meet last week, will compete in the shot put Friday.

The top four finishers in each regional event, along with two at-large berths from throughout the state, advance to the state meet May 30-June 1 at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

The Olentangy boys also won the 3,200 relay Wednesday with Jason Rettinger, Roman Corbett, Ty Munroe and Hugh Jacobsmeyer clocking 7:44.99.

“The guys ran a smart race,” Whalen said. “The first three legs kept us in the top four. Our strategy is always to give the baton to Hugh with a chance for him to bring it home.”

Watterson’s Pierre-Andre Geoffrion won the long jump (22-11) and Pickerington North’s Panashe Chavi finished first in the pole vault (15-0).

Hilliard Davidson's Celia Schulte runs the anchor leg of the first-place 3,200 relay during the Division I regional championships Wednesday at Pickerington North.

For the girls, Hilliard Davidson’s Ashley Alsko, Emi Schroyer, Gemma Pusateri and Celia Schulte won the 3,200 relay (9:17.33).

“They are a young and hungry team with room to improve next week at state,” Davidson distance coach Nate King said. “We were led by junior Emi Schroyer, who had a season-best split in the No. 2 spot, giving us the lead in the middle of the race.”

Dublin Jerome’s Syna Sony won the high jump (5-8) and Canal Winchester’s Makayla Merrill finished first in the shot put (38-11).
