OHSAA softball tournament draw: No. 1 Strasburg poised for historic run

As expected, defending Division IV state softball champion Strasburg has received a No. 1 sectional tournament seed and is poised for what could be a historic postseason run.

The Tigers were one of many area teams involved in sectional-district softball tournament drawings held recently but their quest is unique, to say the least.

“It was good,” said Strasburg head coach Tom Spidell of the Tigers’ draw. “It’s one of those things that being the No. 1 seed we go on the line, and we’ll play whoever wants to come play us, and that’s fine.”

The No. 1-seeded Tigers (20-3) will host No. 16 seed Berlin Hiland (0-10) in an opening-round sectional tournament game on Tuesday, May 7 at 5 p.m. at Franklin Park. The winner of that game will face the winner of No. 11 Beallsville (2-11) vs. No. 10 Bridgeport (8-13) for a sectional crown on Thursday, May 8 at 5 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Strasburg, which has nine state titles to its credit, is currently tied with Warren Champion and Akron Springfield for the most state softball championships in OHSAA history. The Tigers would love to defend their crown by winning a 10th title and become Ohio’s all-time leader (in terms of state crowns) in the sport.

They welcome the challenge and possible historic possibilities that await on the long and unpredictable tournament trail which leads to Akron’s Firestone Stadium, site of the state tournament in early June.

“At the end of the day you’ve got to beat good teams to get there, so we’re just going to take them one game at a time,” Spidell said. “We’re just looking forward to the tournament and to get going and see if we can make another run.”

Another Division IV area power to watch in the tourney is Conotton Valley, which received the No. 2 seed.
