Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating deadly hit-and-run in Mahoning County

SMITH TWP. ‒ A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night on Alliance-Sebring Road, just outside Alliance, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Stark County Coroner's Office identified the pedestrian as 48-year-old Catherine L. Ruggly, who was listed as homeless, releasing the information around 1:35 p.m. Thursday.

Ruggly was walking east on Alliance-Sebring Road near Oyster Road in Mahoning County and was struck by an unknown sport-utility vehicle. The OHP's Canfield Post said in a news release that the woman landed in a watery ditch around 9 p.m.

Ruggly was taken to Aultman Alliance Community Hospital, where she died.

The SUV, also traveling east, continued east on Alliance-Sebring Road after striking the woman. The SUV has possible damage to the front right of the vehicle, troopers said.

The crash was reported at 9:03 p.m.

Harry Campbell, an investigator for the Stark County Coroner's Office, said the woman's body was transferred to Cuyahoga County for an autopsy, "due to it being a vehicular homicide." He said a relative of Ruggly's had been notified of her death before the office released the victim's name.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Canfield Post at 330-533-6866. The crash remains under investigation.

Smith Township Police and firefighters, along with Sebring Police, assisted state troopers at the scene.
