The Ohio State Buckeyes have decided to make a major change on their coaching staff by promoting an in-house assistant to run game coordinator in 2022.

According to an official announcement from the program, running backs coach Tony Alford has been given a raise and a new title as the team’s run game coordinator. He’ll continue to carry out his previous duties, but will take on the added responsibility, beginning next season.

Alford has been a staple at Ohio State for the last seven seasons and has been instrumental in developing the Buckeyes’ running backs room. Moving forward, he’ll try to help the Buckeyes in an increased capacity.

“Tony has continually mentored and produced tough, reliable and productive running backs for the Buckeyes,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said in a release, per Eleven Warriors. “He has a terrific understanding of how to get his student-athletes to perform at such a high rate of competitiveness, and I’m really pleased to promote him to run game coordinator.”

Alford arrived at Ohio State in 2015 and has since gone on to coach professional-level talent year-after-year. In his time with the Buckeyes, he’s worked with Ezekiel Elliott, Curtis Samuel, Mike Weber, J.K. Dobbins, and Trey Sermon, all of whom have gone on to be selected in the NFL Draft.

Following the 2021 season, Alford was given the offer to leave Ohio State and join Brian Kelly’s new staff at LSU. However, he declined, citing his desire to stay in Columbus and keep working with the “best head coach in all of college football.”

“I’ve got a great room,” Alford told The Columbus Dispatch. “I’ve got great kids that I have so much respect and admiration for. I hope that they believe that I give them as much as they give me.

“I’m working with the best head coach in all of college football, and I’ve got unbelievable kids. Why would I leave?”

Alford’s loyalty paid off as he received a huge promotion and can now have even more influence on Ohio State’s high-powered offense.
