Replay: Ohio State wins 35-16 vs. Rutgers on TreVeyon Henderson's big day, improves to 9-0

Ohio State has a significant win streak on the line Saturday.

The No. 1 Buckeyes are looking for their 10th-straight win against Rutgers since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten in 2014.

But Rutgers seems to be on a different trajectory in 2023, winning six of its first eight games of the 2023 season for the first time since 2012, and earning a spot in a bowl game for the second time in three seasons.

Ohio State will kick off against Rutgers at 12 p.m. Saturday on CBS.

Ohio State's Tommy Eichenberg hurt

Although OSU's defense made two straight fourth-down stands, there was a bit of bad news for the Buckeyes: Linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, who leads the team in tackles today with 12, appears to be injured.

Kyle McCord has three touchdown toses today, the third coming with 2:07 to play. He connected with his former high school teammate Marvin Harrison Jr.

Rutgers decides not to use Kyle Monangai on fourth down

Facing fourth down with 4:16 left, Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt threw a lollipop into a gathering of three Ohio State defenders who had surrounded Christian Dremel. Needless to say, the Scarlet Knights did not convert on that play, and OSU will have a short field to work with.

Ohio State's defense stands strong on fourth down

With 8:14 left in the game, Ohio State's Ty Hamilton sacked Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt for a 7-yard loss on fourth down to give the Buckeyes the ball at their own 13.

Kyle Monangai is averaging 6.6 yards per carry and has 159 yards for Rutgers.

Rutgers takes halftime lead on Ohio State | Rutgers 9, OSU 7

The Scarlet Knights took advantage of Kyle McCord's interception to end a third straight drive with a field goal. Those three drives started at the Rutgers 20, OSU 32 and OSU 46.

Ohio State's Kyle McCord throws another pick

Kyle McCord, who went 219 straight passes without throwing an interception, has now thrown three in the last two games – two against Wisconsin, and one this afternoon. His latest was a misfire that landed in the arms of Rutgers' Mohamed Toure.

Rutgers takes advantage of short field against Ohio State | OSU 7, Rutgers 6

Starting at the OSU 32, Rutgers made it to the 2-yard line before Josh Proctor made a huge third-down stop to force the Scarlet Knights to settle for a 21-yard field goal.

Ohio State turns over the ball on downs

On fourth down, Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco rushed to the left for a gain of 2 yards to the OSU 32 when he needed 5 yards to convert. Thus, Rutgers took over with a short field to work with.

Last season, a similar such play led to a confrontation between Rutgers coach Greg Schiano and Ohio State head man Ryan Day.

Rutgers gets on the board against Ohio State | OSU 7, Rutgers 3

The Scarlet Knights made a 22-yard field goal to end any possibility of an OSU shutout. The score was set up by a Rutgers trick play. On fourth down, the Scarlet Knights faked a quarterback dive. Instead, Gavin Wimsatt slipped it between his legs to Kyle Monangai who rushed 45 yards.

Ohio State's Kyle McCord completes first 11 passes

OSU signal caller Kyle McCord completed his first 11 pass attempts before two off-target throws helped stall the latest Buckeyes' drive.

He has 64 yards and a touchdown to this point.

Going back to last week's 24-10 win over Wisconsin, McCord threw 18 straight completions, a new Ohio State record.

Cade Stover seems likely to miss today's Ohio State football game

Although he wasn't listed as unavailable on the team's pregame status report, Ohio State tight end Cade Stover does not look like he'll play vs. Rutgers. Stover is in pads on the sideline at SHI Stadium, but without a helmet, usually a good indication a player won't see action. According to CBS, Stover is dealing with a right knee injury.

Gee Scott makes over-the-shoulder touchdown catch for Ohio State | OSU 7, Rutgers 0

Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson had runs of 7 and 13 yards. Emeka Egbuka made his first catch since he left hurt in the Maryland game, a 10-yard reception. And that set the table for Gee Scott's nice 14-yard grab in the back corner of the end zone.

Kyle McCord, despite battling a sprained ankle, has opened the game with four straight completions. He's, as you may know, facing his dad's former team this afternoon.

Rutgers also goes three-and-out

The Scarlet Knights punted after gaining just 6 yards. It was an 18-yard punt that landed at the OSU 46, but even that was fairly impressive given how awful the snap was that Flynn Appleby had to field.

Some early personnel notes for Ohio State

Xavier Johnson was back to receive the opening kick, and Buckeyes receiver Emeka Egbuka, who missed the past three games with an ankle injury, was out on the field for the opening series. It was a series that ended after three plays, followed by an OSU punt.

Ohio State takes on Rutgers as No. 1 team in CFP

Ohio State will take the field Saturday as the No. 1 team in the country.

The Buckeyes were at the top of the first College Football Playoff rankings of the year ahead of Georgia, Michigan and Florida State. But that ranking does not matter to Oho State coach Ryan Day.

“None of those goals have been met other than winning the first game, so we’ve got a lot of football ahead of us. We’ve got to go to work and we'll look up at the end of the year. Our goal is to be the No. 1 team at the end of the season.”

Two Rutgers defenders out against Ohio State

Devin Brown working with second-team Ohio State offense before Rutgers

Devin Brown seemingly had a quick recovery from an ankle sprain.

The Ohio State quarterback is back working with the Buckeyes' second-team offense ahead of OSU vs. Rutgers Saturday at SHI Stadium.

Against Penn State, Brown was taken down by multiple defenders right in front of the goal line. He slowly walked off the field with the help of multiple trainers and went into Ohio State's medical tent.

He was later carted off the field and taken to the Ohio State locker room.

Greg Schiano said altercation with Ryan Day ‘feels like years ago’

Greg Schiano and Ryan Day had a memorable altercation the last time Ohio State faced Rutgers. But heading into 2023, that moment “feels like years ago.”

"I think that's the distant past," Schiano told reporters Monday.

After a late hit by then-Rutgers wide receiver Aron Cruickshank which knocked down Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco, Schaino remembered a swarm of Buckeye players surrounding his player, who was ejected for a personal foul in OSU’s 49-10 win in 2022.

Both Day and Schiano stood at the 35-yard line helping defend their players. And a year later, there was nothing more to it for the Rutgers coach.

"It had nothing to do with the fake punt," Schiano said of a call OSU made when it was up by more than five touchdowns. "It had to do with protecting our player who was on their sideline who was surrounded and was bring pushed around. That fake punt wasn't called. It was our fault. We didn't put an edge to the punt block, and the kid was taught to roll and if it's there, take it. No, it was truly protecting our player."

And in the days leading up to the Scarlet Knights’ annual matchup against the Buckeyes, this was all Schiano was focused on.

“We’re trying to be 1-0 at the end of the Ohio State season,” Schiano told reporters Monday. “We have to have a great week of preparation to do that and we have to go play our best game and see where that stacks up against theirs. I can’t control anything about them, but I certainly can us. And that’s going to be my focus: that we have a great, consistent week of practice and then go play our best game of the season.”
